This has changed significantly over the years, as the same study was performed in 2001, yet showed only 35% of Americans supporting same sex marriages (Study: Opposition to).

For my experiment on breaking norms, I chose to break multiple norms all in one experiment.

My experiment was to see how people at the mall reacted when my guy friend and I held hands while walking together.

Social Norms are unwritten rules about how to behave.

They provide us with an expected idea of how to behave in a particular social group or culture. We do not expect people to behave randomly but to behave in certain ways in particular situations. Each social situation entails its own particular set of expectations about the “proper” way to behave. One way in which these expectations become apparent is when we look at the roles that people play in society. For example, students, neighbors and patients in a hospital are all aware of the norms governing behavior. And as the individual moves from one group to another, their behavior changes accordingly. It is difficult to see how human society could operate without social norms. Not only did I hold a man’s hand, but he is also African-American.My experiment broke the norm of the interracial couples dating each other. To start my experiment, I went to the Valencia Town Center Mall on a Saturday at approximately pm.This was purposely done on a Saturday so the mall was more packed and we could view more reactions.son, daughter, sister, brother, students, worker, friend etc. Each social role carries expected behaviors called norms.
